General Preschool Information
Preschool classes in Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) are offered in the morning and in the afternoon and are three (3) hours long. The classes are licensed by the state and meet all requirements for high-quality early childhood education. The class schedule includes a meal (breakfast or lunch), whole-group and small-group instruction, outside playtime, and an extended period for free choice centers.

Where are state preschool classes located in Garden Grove Unified School District?
- Your child must live within the attendance boundaries of Garden Grove Unified School District.
- Your child must have his or her fourth birthday on or before December 2 of the year he or she will be enrolled in preschool

There are preschool classes currently available at Clinton Corner Family Campus and at the following elementary school sites: Brookhurst, Bryant, Eisenhower, Heritage, Lawrence, Murdy, Peters, Rosita, Russell, Violette, and Wakeham. What is the School Readiness Preschool class? School Readiness preschool classes are only offered at Clinton Corner Family Campus. These preschool classes are supported by the First 5 California School Readiness Initiative. School readiness focuses on communities in Garden Grove Unified School District with low-performing schools as measured by the Academic Performance Index (API). What will my child learn in Preschool?

The goal of the GGUSD preschool program is to provide students with opportunities for learning in an enriched environment that allows for maximum intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development. How do I know if my child is ready for kindergarten?
- School Readiness nurses are available to parents with concerns regarding their child’s development.
- A School Readiness counselor is available if a parent needs help in identifying resources that are available in the community.
- Parent education classes, including nutrition education, parenting, early literacy, and home safety, are open to all parents. Please call for the current parent education calendar.
- A resource library with informational brochures and pamphlets is available on various topics of interest, including how you can help your child be ready for kindergarten. Parenting videos and books are also available for parents to check out at their convenience.
Parents often wonder what they can do to help a child be ready for school and be successful. Consider the following when preparing your child for kindergarten:
- Play with the sounds of language. Sing together, rhyme words, and clap syllables – all of these activities develop a child’s ability to discriminate and manipulate the different sounds that make up language. Before a child can learn to read, he or she must be able to “take apart" and “put together" the sounds that make words.
- Encourage an interest in books and other written material. Identify signs while traveling, talk about the pictures he or she draws, and provide your child with writing materials and books. Pretending to read and write is a pre-literate activity! One of the most effective ways to encourage an interest in reading is to read aloud to your young child.
- Give your child opportunities to be with other children. Create opportunities in which your child will cooperate and negotiate within friendships he or she has developed. Through pretend and play activities with peers, children learn to care about others and learn how to share, express anger appropriately, and follow rules.
- Teach your child to persist. Work on puzzles, read books, tell stories, draw pictures, and, while doing so, encourage your child to “stick with it.” Working together on an enjoyable activity extends the time a child is able to focus, and a child can learn how satisfying it can be to complete a task successfully.
